Causal disposal of non-degradable glass waste adds to the burden of local landfills. With funding support from The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust and professional advice of the Environmental Protection Department, Hong Chi Association launched the Glass Bottle Recycling Campaign on 20 April 2010. In the coming 3 years, collection bins will be set up for glass waste produced by nearby residential and commercial sectors. Hong Chi trainees will be deployed to collect used glass bottles and send them to a local construction plant on Anderson Road, Clear Water Bay, where they will be crushed into glass sand (as a substitute for river sand) for the production of eco-bricks. Also, they will serve as Ambassadors to assist in conducting school talks and road shows to spread the green message and call for greater public support.
The first phase of the Campaign will see Hong Chi Association set up collection bins in 13 service units and nearby housing areas, plus the bar zone on Minden Avenue and Hart Avenue, Tsim Sha Tsui. In the second and third phases, collection points will be extended to cover private housing areas. |
